Learning Curve

I am learning how to drive a manual transmission. Like most skills requiring physical coordination, this is not easy for me. At least this is a task for which both positive and negative feedback are strong and instantaneous...

once i was coming out of the woods this summer and my rotator (who would take over my site for my days off) (and who would bring a company vehicle that i would drive back so neither of us would have to leave our own cars at the trailhead) brought a truck with a manual transmission. little did he know that i had never driven stick before. and he had to get into the woods, & i had to get out, so he gave me a quick lesson and i practiced starting from a stop over and over on the logging road on the way out. i actually managed to get back to pinkham notch (home base) without stalling out once on the road. ...of course, as soon as i pulled into the parking lot & tried to back into a space, i stalled out, and all the guys on trail crew were hanging outside & made fun of me.
