Weekend Filler: Random Sampling

Posted by Arcane Gazebo at January 23, 2005 12:30 PM

This was a big blog trend like two weeks ago; I'm late to the party.

Fire up your favorite music player (I used my iPod), load your entire library, and hit shuffle. Then post the first ten songs.

1. Ladytron: cracked LCD (Light and Magic)
2. Stereolab: The Man With 100 Cells (Margerine Eclipse)
3. Blonde Redhead: Ballad of Lemons (Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons)
4. Black Lab: Keep Myself Awake (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Album)
5. The Shins: Mine's Not A High Horse (Chutes Too Narrow)
6. Christophe Beck, Jesse Tobias, & Joss Whedon: The Mustard (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling)
7. The Killers: Smile Like You Mean It (Hot Fuss)
8. Muse: Futurism (Origin of Symmetry)
9. The Libertines: Campaign of Hate (The Libertines)
10. Pinback: Non Photo-Blue (Summer in Abaddon)

Fairly representative, except for having two songs from Buffy soundtracks—I really have only those two CDs, it's not like my iPod is full of Buffy music. ("The Mustard" is just David Fury singing "They got... the mustard... OUT!"; it was very funny if you saw that episode. The Black Lab song sounds like something you'd play at a prom. Actually, maybe that's where it appeared in the show.) The Pinback song is definitely the best of this selection.

Post yours in the comments!

Here's my sample, genereted via loading up iTunes on L's computer and hitting the completely random shuffle, then skipping all the songs that are hers. :)

1. Feelin Groovy/59th Street - Simon & Garfunkel
2. She's an Angel - TMBG
3. Leyenda - Vanessa Mae
4. Aquarius - Aqua
5. Pop Goes The World - Men Without Hats
6. Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec - Nobuo Uematsu (FFVIII soundtrack)
7. It's My Turn To Fly - The Urge (Titan AE soundtrack)
8. Closing Time - Semisonic
9. Rainbow of Mine - DJ Mystik
10. Flyswatter - The Eels

Here's another sample, without editing for songs that aren't mine:

1. Start - Nobuo Uematsu (FFX OSV)
2. Blue (De Ba Dee) - Eifel 65
3. The Medication Is Wearing Off - The Eels
4. Segue: Nathan Alder - David Bowie
5. Antarctica - Vangelis
6. Beauty And The Beast - Angela Lansbury (Classic Disney vol 1)
7. Limerock - Yo Yo Ma, Mark O'connor, Edgar Meyer
8. Stargate - David Arnold (Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits, vol 1)
9. The End Of All Things - Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings: RotK soundtrack)
10. Una - Emer Kenny

So yeah, how much of the first list is recent anyways? I was just commenting that I haven't listened to much music produced in the last few years. Only exception I can think of is the Franz Ferdinand cd I bought recently. (Which hasn't been imported to iTunes yet, so wouldn't show up on the list).

Oh yeah, and #5 and #8 on the first list are somewhat deceptive - they're the only song by that artist that I have.

Yeah, I remember a bunch of those songs (on the first list) from back in the day. It's the opposite effect with me: I've only recently turned to alt-rock and indie-rock, so my collection is pretty young, with very few albums from before 2001.

There's a Buffy album besides the musical? Is it like the X-files Key of X deal? Why have I not heard of this??
I miss the musical, and the sing/dance-alongs to the musical the closing crew at our store used to have.
Actually I don't miss that second part, that was actually pretty horrifying.

Yeah, it's a collection of songs that appeared on the show (up to the third season, I think). There's another one called Radio Sunnydale (but I don't have it).

I'll go ahead and do this live on my computer (why wait for the next time I'm using Hoopak, which is the name of my iPod, by the way):

1. Goodbye-Goodbye (Oingo Boingo)
2. Opportunities (Reprise) (Pet Shop Boys)
3. Republican Party Reptile (Big Country)
4. Grande Valse Brillante from 'Les Sylphides' (Chopin)
5. Left to my Own Devices (Motormark, coveringh the Pet Shop Boys)
6. After Hours (Swing Out Sister)
7. Try Not to Breathe (REM)
8. Where's the Party (Madonna)
9. Big Mistake (Natalie Imbuglia)
10. Room at the Top (Adam Ant)

Notice the 80s flavor to the above list? ;)
