Hans Bethe

Via Preposterous Universe I learn that Hans Bethe passed away over the weekend. I was fortunate to be able to attend a colloquium he gave at Caltech; he was age 93 at the time but still energetic and active in the community. He will be missed.

You should look at Cornell's press release. I forgot to forward it to you when I got it yesterday. Sorry.

I saw him give a colloquium at Cornell when I was there. Our QM prof tried to get him to come to a class dinner, but it didn't work out. (David Mermin did come.)

Bethe was the last of the early 20th century old guard who was around, unless I am missing something.

I heard a cool story about Bethe via a Chris Pethick e-mail forwarded to me. I will pass this along to you by e-mail. (It's a pain to type.) I'll give you Cornell's obit as well. Prepare for some e-mail...
