Thursday Cat-dream-blogging

Posted by Arcane Gazebo at July 21, 2005 2:14 PM

I had a dream last night in which I was hosting a party. (My apartment had conveniently expanded to about three times its actual size to accomodate this.) I was out on the patio talking to guests when Omen showed up. As usual, I gave him a cat treat, but when I did so a second cat appeared with a demanding look. So I gave this cat a treat as well—which prompted the appearance of a third cat. Things proceeded in this manner until I had twenty-six cats looking at me hungrily. (Is it significant that I knew the precise number of cats, and that this number is equal to my age?) I decided this had gone on long enough, and put away the bag of cat treats.

That's when the cats jumped me.

According to a book of dream symbols, cats symbolize death. Personally, I don't agree with that.

Stephanie's free (and therefore worthless) dream analysis:

It is not significant that the number of cats equals your age (I had no idea you were that young), but rather that you remembered it and found it significant after waking.

The party and the cats showing up (uninvited guests) demanding something from you represent the responsibilities and commitments in your life that seem to just show up without warning or invitation and take over (you know, when someone "volunteers" you to do something, or something has to get done and you're about the only one willing or capable of taking it on?).

How did you feel about the cats? Were you pleased to be wanted? Were you frustrated by their demands? Angry? Scared? That represents how you feel about those various commitments. The dream allows you to explore your real feelings about them in a safe, abstract direction.

Either that, or it represents Omen sitting on your pillow whispering subliminal messages about Pounce in your ear while you sleep....

You thought I was older? I usually feel like I appear younger than I actually am, but I guess it's all context-dependent.

A detail I left out was that, as cats 2 through 25 appeared, I dealt with them in the background while turning my attention to the guests. So under the proposed interpretation, these could be responsibilities that I am putting aside for a while until their combined weight becomes large enough that I can't ignore them any longer. I'm reminded of a dream I had back in March that seemed to be about similar issues.

On the other hand, back in March I had a huge amount of anxiety about such things, whereas right now I've been feeling like things are under control.

Heh, I'm glad I'm still in the people think I'm younger than I actually am crowd. :)

As for lots of cats, maybe that's your true calling...there is even a falling cat theorem, after all.
