The backlog gets longer [Open Thread]

I've joined a team for a relay race this coming weekend. This would not be especially noteworthy except that the race is 199 miles long, starting in Calistoga and finishing in Santa Cruz. So this will doubtless be quite the adventure and I'll probably do some liveblogging from my phone.

Meanwhile, did I mention that I have a backlog of music to review? I went to the record store on Friday and came out with five albums, bringing the total to 13 I need to review. Here's one of them, and maybe I'll do the rest in batches of four or five.

Clor: Clor: This band has kind of a synth-heavy Brit rock sound. It's another one of those albums that sounds good at the time but later I can't remember what it sounded like. For a while every time one of the tracks came up on my iPod I'd be like, "What is this? Oh yeah, Clor." Or maybe I've just picked up so much new music lately that I'm unable to keep track of it all. Anyway, "Love + Pain" is a nice track.

The background music definitely sounds cool, but the singing voice is grating. (This may not be true on all tracks, but it seemed to crack several times, as far as I can tell.) I can certainly see the Brit-rock aspect you mention, and I have a certain love for British synth-pop (as you know).

The lead singer isn't the high point of that band for me, either. He has a style of singing sometimes where he tosses up the individual syllables without regard to which ones would normally be stressed, which I find irritating. But that may be partly a songwriting issue.

The singing certainly isn't the best part of the song, but I don't really find it grating either. (It's not great, but it doesn't grate?) Consider this, however--what if you swapped in the lead singer from Rammstein? I'm getting a funny feeling in my pants just thinking about it...

I have to say, I didn't find anything remotely annoying about the singing in Love+Pain. Nothing to write home about, but nothing that detracted from my appreciation of the song.

The singing in Details of the War, however, could peel paint.

The guy's voice bothered me. What can I say.

Rammstein can be painful---especially their version of Barbie Girl.

Yeah, the lead singer of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is a different story. I meant to say something about the singing in my review of that album, but had trouble describing it. I did find that once I got used to his voice I enjoyed the album a lot more.
