Today is mix CD release day, so here's my ranking of my favorite 20 songs of 2006 (which, in a different order, comprise the tracklist of the CD). The CD is entitled Year of the Wolf, copies of which are available upon request. (If I see you during the holidays I'm going to hand you a copy even if you don't request one.) This naming scheme (following last year's Year of the Phoenix) may or may not continue in the future, but since it worked again this year I went with it.
The rules: Only music released in 2006 (or December 2005) qualifies, and no more than one track is selected from a single album. Generally records which were released earlier in other countries (typically the UK) before a 2006 US release are disqualified, but I have been inconsistent in applying this rule.
Special congratulations to the Decemberists and The Hold Steady, who are returning from last year's favorite songs list.
20. "Help Us Out" by the Futureheads (from News and Tributes [US release])
Spiffy (though I have heard only a few of the songs you've put on this).
I get the Arctic Monkeys confused with Snow Patrol due to the "coldness" of their names. Am I the only one who has this problem?
Posted by: Jolene | December 14, 2006 4:08 PMTo add to the confusion, Snow Patrol used to be called Polar Bear, but had to change because an American band with the same name sent them legal threats. They then recorded an album called Songs for Polar Bears.
At least they didn't go with Polar Bear 1979.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | December 14, 2006 4:45 PMI haven't heard any of the songs on the list, but I know that will change soon enough.
Travis: If I haven't mentioned this before, let me say so now: Your case of OCD is actually more severe than mine in many respects. You may even have me beat if we consider everything. :)
I'll stick with my somewhat facetious post on this year's music (because I can't draw from any reasonable sort of volume to write something this definitive or comprehensive), though I'll be "better" when it comes to my post on movies of 2006.
I do owe a full review of Loreena McKennitt's album. (There are a couple other full albums I could review, but we'll see if I feel inspired.)
Posted by: Mason | December 14, 2006 4:56 PMMason, surely you've at least heard the two songs that were also on my Coachella CD. :)
My only regret was that I wasn't more obsessive about last year's CD. The quality control problems on that one were embarrassing. (This one should be much better in that regard.)
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | December 14, 2006 5:08 PMAs I told you over Thanksgiving, I was thinking about compiling a CD myself. Only problem is, I don't think I have enough CDs from THIS year to fill one compilation. Maybe a CD comprising multiple years of music that defined my current year...
Posted by: Josh | December 14, 2006 6:32 PMJosh: You should do it! That's a noble theme for a mix CD.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | December 14, 2006 11:33 PMFor my first year in the real world, it seems to make a sort of sense...
Posted by: Josh | December 15, 2006 12:07 AMI did listen to the Coachella CD, though I didn't register the last two songs when I read the above. Clearly, I'll need to listen to the Coachella CD again.
As for OCD, I was refering to the care you were putting in choosing the songs in the first place and describing them to us. I, of course, agree with you about the quality control. :)
I actually have "drafts" of mix CDs as iTunes playlists, but I've been very bad about finalizing things. I also loved Tim's cool covers idea, so I may even do that one before the others. One of these days (and definitely before I leave for England)...
