Friday Random 10: Return of Travel Filler

This morning I'm leaving to visit my girlfriend in Connecticut for the weekend; the blog will receive little attention during this period (not that I've been giving it much attention anyway). Project 365 will be updated as usual. Meanwhile, here is a Friday Random 10 (from the four- and five-star playlist).

  1. Portishead, "Mysterons"
  2. Sleater-Kinney, "Rollercoaster"
  3. Architecture In Helsinki, "What's In Store?"
  4. The Postal Service, "Such Great Heights"
  5. Spiritualized, "Do It All Over Again"
  6. Art Brut, "Moving to L.A."
  7. My Bloody Valentine, "Off Your Face"
  8. Sonic Youth, "Titanium Expose"
  9. Zero 7, "Passing By"
  10. Art Brut, "My Little Brother"

My iPod appears to be confused about my destination... however, a trip to L.A. is a possibility later in the month.

Any good albums out lately? My only recent purchase is the Shins' Wincing The Night Away, which is decent.

I just got the new album by Celtic Woman (yes, the group name is singular... though I suppose it can always be regularized). There are a couple songs I really like but nothing spectacular like their cover from Orinoco Flow. Also, the new Loreena McKennitt album is a lot better. (Thogh I think I probably made Gazebo have a desire to never listen to Loreena McKennitt again given that her music is one I have a storied history of overplaying.)

Patty Griffin has a new one out come Tuesday. I'll check it out and report back. Meantime my Neko Case phase is going into extra innings.

I heard a band called Kanary in Las Vegas (though they're based out of L.A.), and they are awesome, if you like hard rock/punk women singing incredibly and playing guitars incredibly.

I don't feel like signing up for something to comment on the flickr pages, so I figure that because this is a filler post, that it's ok to hijack it.

I noticed your comment about losing again in wii boxing.

I tried a wii for the first time yesterday. (Cue Lemming.) I was decent enough at tennis, but I was "impressive" at Rayman Raving Rabids (sp?), especially on the drawing games where the steadiness of my hand was immediately evident.

I actually had to stop playing because my right arm was getting sore and I have ping pong today. (I think once I get a wii, I'm actually going to have to consciously figure out a bit of a playing schedule so that I don't screw up my ping pong. There's a certain SURF student of mine who needs to learn a little ping pong in addition to math and physics. :) )

Thanks for the recommendations everybody! Four Tet, Sigur Ros, and Bright Eyes are well represented in my library. I've heard enough good things about Boards of Canada that they're already on my list to check out at some point. I haven't heard of either Rival Schools or Kanary but I'll look into both.

Mason: Needing to have a Flickr account to comment on photos is indeed annoying; maybe I should set up a dedicated thread for commenting on the recent photos and link to it under the photo on the sidebar.

Tennis is my strongest Wii Sport, and boxing is my worst.

I roll really well on wii. (But never on Shomer Shabbos, of course.)

About today's 365 photo:

"Do NOT put that in your pants! I'm serious!"

I think having a "recent photos" thread might be nice. I like commenting on them, but don't care much for the extra login, or the fact that I haven't figured out how to get a feed of the comments there.

By the way, the Wii is a great size for that, and interestingly poetic about it at the same time.

The Wrens?

I demand a review!
