I looked up the tower in Wikipedia and found that it's considered ugly enough to airbrush out of travel brochures. For shame! I like it—it's like a red claw reaching into the sky. How is that not awesome? Wikipedia goes on to quote Herb Caen on the tower: “I keep waiting for it to stalk down the hill and attack the Golden Gate Bridge.” I guess that's supposed to be a criticism but I would say that as an endorsement.
Anyway, here's a new thread for Project 365 comments. Will it presage a return to regular blogging? Only time will tell.
Dude, that's gorgeous.
Fwiw, I've never thought ill of it -- it just belongs. Probably because it was there before I developed my shameful excuse for a sense of aesthetics.
Never thought of it as a claw before, but now, as far as I'm concerned, it's the arm of the Bay Areas gigantic robotic defender (courtesy of Japan), protruding from its secret underground lair. Airbrushing it out of photos is really a poorly-organized government cover up.
Posted by: Lemming | May 28, 2007 12:52 AMI think I've been airbrushed out of photos as part of a poorly organized government cover-up. Bastards!

Posted by: shellock | May 29, 2007 6:57 AMHow do you force-choke a camera?
Posted by: Lemming | May 30, 2007 9:08 AMThe political cat picture is nice.
Posted by: Mason | June 5, 2007 1:56 AMYes, pretty tree. I guess the fact that I used to walk on the west side of the street (BART! BMUG! Cafe Firenze!) made it more apparent.
I've eaten there all of once. They've got a nice patio out back, but the bathrooms are cramped (and inadequate when busy).
Posted by: Lemming | June 7, 2007 9:15 AMI still haven't eaten at Chez Panisse, but I might try to do so before I leave Berkeley.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | June 7, 2007 11:46 AMI remember tasty but not very plentiful beef, and some incredible dessert, but the rest is a blur.

Your challenge: Identify the source of the above quote without googling, etc.
Posted by: Mason | June 11, 2007 12:19 AMYou're serving brains at games night?
Posted by: Mason | June 16, 2007 12:20 AMYeah, you really cornered that bug.
Posted by: Mason | June 22, 2007 1:40 AMBraaaaaaaains...
Posted by: Mason | June 29, 2007 12:52 AMThe heat lamp picture is awesome!
I love spatial patterns...
Posted by: Mason | July 2, 2007 12:36 AMMy precioussssssss....
So, have you named your new baby?
Mine is called Vecna, but that was primarily because my external harddrive was already named Phylactery (for obvious reasons). If I ever buy a mouse, it will be the "Mouse of Vecna".
Posted by: Mason | July 10, 2007 12:10 AMI named it Valkyrie after the class I'm currently playing in nethack. (My last two laptops were named after Valkyrie Profile characters, so it's doubly appropriate.) This was originally intended to be a placeholder but I may keep it.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | July 10, 2007 8:25 PMMy G3 Mac laptop was named "Valkyrie", but I was thinking of The Ride.
Posted by: Mason | July 10, 2007 8:26 PM"diagonal slash"? All slashes are diagonal, but this one in particular is a backslash.
Amirite?
Posted by: Lemming | July 13, 2007 12:42 AMI want to play Trivial Pursuit! I haven't played in a while, and that's one of my favorite board games.
Posted by: Mason | July 16, 2007 6:32 AMHa, I turned in a legendarily bad performance in that game, managing to acquire not a single wedge. That might have been a good thing, since I had to drive home.
I blame my repeated attempts to obtain the green wedge, despite that being my worst category.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | July 16, 2007 12:44 PMPlaying with one hand, eh? What were you doing with the other hand?
Posted by: Mason | July 23, 2007 6:46 AMTaking the picture.
Posted by: Arcane Gazebo | July 23, 2007 9:18 AMInstead, rather, purple.
Posted by: Lemming | July 27, 2007 12:45 AMAwesome aerial shot. (Also, Lemming throated me on the purple comment...)

Posted by: Lemming | August 4, 2007 1:39 AMHow about Chinese Guy Fawkes Day? That's what I want to see!
Posted by: Mason | August 4, 2007 2:13 AMT', eh? With respect to what variable are you differentiating? :)
Posted by: Mason | August 10, 2007 12:30 AMfogwin get.
Posted by: Lemming | August 20, 2007 12:31 PMThe fog picture is fantastic!
Posted by: Mason | August 20, 2007 6:19 PMI know it's a last-minute picture, but I actually think it's pretty cool.
Posted by: Mason | August 23, 2007 7:08 PMI like the way the flower looks in the shot!
Posted by: Mason | August 30, 2007 11:47 PMOooh, oooh, oooh... I think I know! Maybe you're visiting "Anaheim". :)
GO DODGERS!!!!!
Posted by: Mason | September 1, 2007 2:47 AMI like the Campanile pictures. Most of them have been unique enough to be interesting, though I imagine there's no shortage of said pictures around Berkeley.
Also, reminds me of the old BMUG newsletters -- I think every one had a new picture of the Campanile on it, sometimes with cutesy photoshopping, before that was even a verb!
Posted by: Lemming | September 5, 2007 10:10 AMYou should start with the most important section (or at least the one that will get read the most): the acknowledgements. I made that part of my thesis especially snarky. :) (Actually, I guess the "Version 2" [or did I write "Version 2.0"...? I forget.] I put in the title in the copy I gave to my program might technically be snarkier, but the submitted version's title omits that.)
Posted by: Mason | September 5, 2007 11:17 PMThe moment I saw the image, I compulsively moved my mouse cursor on top of the mouse cursor in the image.
Posted by: Lemming | September 6, 2007 9:57 AMWhat types of undead were the leaves turning?
Posted by: Mason | September 10, 2007 4:44 PMHmmm... you're getting a lot of spam on the picture comment page now. It might be good to start a fresh one.
Posted by: Mason | September 20, 2007 8:01 PMOops, sorry for leaving one of those up the entire week. My plan was to let the summer thread last until the autumnal equinox, which is this Sunday, so I'll probably stick to that. Meanwhile I've banned key phrases from the repeat spammers but I get new ones every day...
